Introducing a Collar and Harness

beginner · A few days of short sessions

A collar and harness are two of the first pieces of equipment your puppy will wear. Getting them used to both early makes walks, ID tags, and vet visits much easier. Most puppies adjust within a few days of short, positive sessions. The goal is simple: your puppy learns that collar and harness mean good things are coming.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. 1. Let your puppy sniff the collar

Hold the collar out and let your puppy sniff it freely. The moment they sniff it, mark with a cheerful 'yes' and give a treat. Repeat five to ten times. Keep the session under two minutes.

  2. 2. Touch the collar to their neck

Gently bring the collar near your puppy's neck without fastening it. Mark and treat immediately. If your puppy pulls away, go back to the sniff step. Never force the collar closer.

  3. 3. Fasten the collar for a few seconds

Buckle the collar loosely, mark, and feed several treats in a row. Unfasten it after about five seconds. Check fit: you should fit two fingers comfortably under the collar.

  4. 4. Gradually increase wear time

Each session, leave the collar on a little longer while you play or feed your puppy. Keep sessions short. If your puppy scratches at the collar, distract with a treat or toy rather than removing it immediately, so they don't learn that scratching makes it disappear.

  5. 5. Introduce the harness by sight and smell

Place the harness on the floor and let your puppy investigate it. Mark and treat any calm interaction with it. Do this for one or two sessions before putting it on.

  6. 6. Feed treats through the harness opening

Hold the harness open and lure your puppy to put their nose through the neck opening to reach a treat. Do not fasten anything yet. Repeat until your puppy moves toward the harness willingly.

  7. 7. Rest the harness on their back

Drape the harness over your puppy's back without clipping it. Mark and treat. Remove it after a few seconds. Repeat until your puppy stands relaxed while wearing it unclipped.

  8. 8. Fasten the harness clips

Clip one fastener at a time, marking and treating after each click. Keep the first fully fastened session very short — about ten seconds. Check fit according to the manufacturer's guide.

  9. 9. Move around together while wearing the harness

With the harness on, encourage your puppy to follow you around the room using treats and a happy voice. This helps them get used to the feel of it while staying focused on something positive.

  10. 10. Wear both collar and harness together

Once your puppy is comfortable with each piece separately, put both on in the same session. Keep it brief and reward generously. Build up wear time over the following days.

Troubleshooting

My puppy freezes or cowers when I bring the collar near.

Slow down. Spend more sessions at the sniff-and-treat stage before any contact. Toss treats near the collar on the floor so your puppy approaches it on their own terms. Never push the collar toward a frightened puppy.

My puppy won't stop scratching or trying to remove the collar.

Check the fit first — it may be too loose or irritating. If fit is fine, shorten sessions and increase treat rate while the collar is on. Redirect with a short play session immediately after putting it on so your puppy has something else to focus on.

My puppy bites or mouths the harness straps.

This is common. Redirect to a treat or a short tug toy the moment they reach for the straps. Keep sessions brief so your puppy does not have long stretches of time to practice the mouthing.

My puppy was fine at first but now refuses the harness.

Go back a few steps to where your puppy was last comfortable. Check that the harness fits correctly and is not pinching. Progress can vary day to day — that is normal. Consistency and patience matter more than speed.
