Teach Your Dog to Sit Pretty

intermediate · 1–2 weeks of short sessions

Sit pretty — sometimes called 'beg' — asks your dog to balance upright on their haunches with both front paws raised off the ground. It builds core and back-leg strength while giving your dog a fun, eye-catching trick to show off. Because it requires real balance and muscle control, most dogs need one to two weeks of short daily sessions to get it right. Go slowly, keep sessions to three to five minutes, and always start from a reliable sit.

Master these first

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. 1. Start with a solid sit

Ask your dog to sit on a non-slip surface. Wait until they are calm and settled before moving on. If their sit is shaky, spend a few more days reinforcing it before starting this trick.

  2. 2. Lure the nose upward

Hold a treat just above your dog's nose, directly between their eyes. Move it slowly straight up. You want their nose to follow the treat upward while their bottom stays on the floor. Mark and reward any upward head movement.

  3. 3. Reward small lifts

The moment one or both front paws leave the ground even slightly, mark and treat immediately. Do not wait for a full upright position yet. Small lifts are big wins at this stage.

  4. 4. Use a corner or wall for support

Place your dog in a corner with their back lightly touching the wall. The wall gives gentle balance feedback without forcing anything. This helps dogs who tip backward or struggle to find their center.

  5. 5. Build duration gradually

Once your dog lifts both paws reliably, begin waiting one second before marking. Add one second at a time over several sessions. Never add time if your dog is struggling or losing balance.

  6. 6. Fade the lure

Move the treat to your other hand. Use the same upward hand motion as before, but with an empty hand. Reward from the treat hand after the mark. Repeat until the hand signal alone prompts the behavior.

  7. 7. Add the cue word

Once your dog lifts into position reliably on the hand signal, say your chosen cue — such as 'pretty' or 'beg' — just before the hand signal. Repeat many times so the word becomes the prompt.

  8. 8. Practice away from the wall

Gradually move practice sessions away from the corner. Start on carpet or a mat. Ask for shorter holds at first, then rebuild duration on the open floor as your dog's balance improves.

  9. 9. Proof in different locations

Practice in a few different rooms or calm outdoor spots. New environments can reset balance confidence, so be ready to reward easier attempts and build back up.

  10. 10. Keep sessions short

Three to five minutes per session is enough. Sit pretty uses muscles your dog may not be used to. Fatigue leads to frustration and sloppy form. End every session on a successful rep.

Troubleshooting

My dog keeps standing up instead of lifting their paws from a sit.

Slow down the lure. Move the treat more slowly and only a short distance upward. Mark and reward the instant the bottom stays down and the nose rises. If needed, practice on a slightly raised surface like a low step so standing up is less comfortable.

My dog tips over backward.

Go back to the corner or wall for support. Also check that you are luring straight up rather than back over their head. The treat should stay directly above the nose, not drift toward their tail.

My dog lifts one paw but not both.

This is normal early on. Keep rewarding single-paw lifts and gradually wait a half-second longer before marking. Most dogs bring the second paw up naturally as their balance improves. Do not physically move their paws.

My dog loses interest quickly.

Shorten sessions to two minutes. Use higher-value treats such as small pieces of chicken or cheese. Make sure your dog is not tired or full before training. End before they disengage so they stay eager for the next session.
