The two prices of a self-serve dog wash (2026)

We measured the advertised price of 1,347 self-serve dog wash locations across the US (June 2026) and found a market with almost no middle: farm-store chains charge $9.99, flat, nationwide, while independent wash facilities charge a median of $18 — about 1.8× as much. This piece explains what each tier actually is, and why we publish this as one national finding instead of a state-by-state table. Every location behind these numbers is in our self-serve dog wash directory.

Key findings

  • 1,207 of the 1,208 chain in-store washes in our dataset charge exactly $9.99 — one price across 47states, from a handful of farm-supply chains (nearly all of them Tractor Supply’s in-store pet wash). The remainder top out at $18.
  • Independent self-serve washes charge a median of $18 (25th–75th percentile $15$20, full range $5$60) across 33 states — about 1.8× the chain price.
  • The chains dominate by count: 90% of the priced locations in our dataset are chain stations. If you only counted doors, you’d conclude a dog wash costs $9.99in America — which is exactly why we don’t publish a state-by-state wash table (see methodology).
  • The two tiers sell different things. A chain wash is a wash station inside a farm store — a tub, a dryer, store hours, $9.99. An independent wash is a dedicated facility: typically better tubs, stronger dryers, more supplies included, longer (sometimes 24-hour) access — that is what the extra $8.01 or so buys.

Why no per-state table

Our boarding and grooming studies rank states by median price. We deliberately don’t do that here, because with 90% of priced locations at one flat national price, nearly every state’s median collapses to $9.99— a “wash cost by state” table would just be one chain’s price sheet dressed up as geography. The honest unit of analysis for this market is the segment, not the state.

Methodology

What was measured. The advertised self-serve wash price per location — collected June 2026 as part of the Find My Kennel enrichment pipeline. One price per location; locations that publish no price are excluded rather than imputed (1,347 of the 2,731 wash locations in our directory carry one).

How the segments are defined.“Chain” covers the farm-supply in-store wash stations we harvested chain-wide from the operators’ own store pages (1,208 locations in 47states). “Independent” is every other priced location in the directory — standalone and in-store washes sourced from the open location datasets our directory is built on.

Honest caveats. The independent sample (139 locations) skews toward businesses that publish prices online — smaller cash-only operations are underrepresented, which most likely biases the independent median slightly up. The chain count comes from our own harvest of the chains’ store locators, not an official corporate list — though at 1,208 locations across 47 states it is effectively complete. Prices are list prices at collection time; chains occasionally run wash promotions below list.

Freshness. The underlying directory re-syncs monthly; this piece re-publishes with each refresh of the price data.
