What time does doggy daycare open?

The point of doggy daycare is to cover a working day, so the hours that matter are at the edges: can you drop the dog off before your commute and pick it up after? Among the 460 dog daycares that publish their hours, the median opens at 7am and closes at 6pm. 79% open by 7am, and 28% open before 7, for owners with long commutes or early shifts.

Kennels keep commuter hours. Groomers don't

Boarding kennels keep nearly the same hours as daycares: a median day of 7am–6pm, with 66% open by 7am. Many kennels run daycare too, and the staff are there early for the boarders anyway.

Groomers keep shop hours. The median groomer opens at 8am and closes at 5pm. Only 17% open by 7am, and 41%don’t open until 9 or later. A groom is an appointment of a few hours, and a groomer working alone can only do a few dogs a day, so there is little reason to open at dawn. If you need a groom on a workday, ask about early drop-off: many salons will take a dog before opening and keep it until pickup, sometimes for a small fee.

Drop-off windows and the midday gap

Opening hours aren’t always drop-off hours. 12% of daycares and 12% of kennels spell out a separate drop-off, pickup or check-in window in their published hours. Kennels in particular often limit check-in and check-out to a few hours in the morning and late afternoon, even when staff are on site all day. A smaller group, 2% of kennels and 4%of daycares, close in the middle of the day for feeding, rest time or lunch, and won’t hand a dog over then.

Weekends are a different schedule again. Many kennels open only for short pickup windows on Saturday and Sunday, and most groomers are closed on Sunday: see who is open on Sunday.

How to choose a daycare that fits your day

  • Ask for the drop-off cutoff, not just opening time. Many daycares want dogs in by 9 or 10am so play groups can settle, and a late arrival may need approval.
  • Ask about late-pickup fees. Some charge by the minute after closing time. If your commute runs late, pick a daycare that closes at 7pm.
  • Check holiday and weekend hours, which are often shorter.
  • Price an overnight. If you sometimes can’t make pickup, a night of boarding at the same place can cost less than you think: see a day of daycare against a night of boarding.

The caveats

Weekday hours, first listed. We read the first opening and closing time in each listing’s published hours, which is almost always the weekday line. Facilities with different hours on different weekdays are counted by the first one listed.

Published, not guaranteed.Hours come from facilities’ own websites when we collected them, and can change. Confirm before you rely on an early drop-off.

Only facilities that publish hours. A daycare whose hours are only on a booking app or a phone message is not in the sample.

Where these numbers come from

We read the opening hours that 7,098 facilities in our directory publish on their own websites (460 daycares, 3,322 boarding kennels, 3,316 groomers) and took the first opening and closing time listed. Published hours lead with the weekday schedule, so this is a weekday reading. A business that both boards and runs daycare counts as a daycare; 24-hour listings are left out.

Every figure on this page is read from our own directory when the page builds, so it moves as the data does (collected June 2026). For the same dataset treated at full length — sample bars, percentiles and methodology — see FMK Research.
