DIY Dog Wash vs the Groomer
What does washing your own dog at a self-serve tub save over a groomer? It depends which tub: the national chain price and the independent price are two different markets.

Self-serve dog wash vs groomer: the numbers
How much is a self-serve dog wash? It depends on which one. At the national chain tub the answer is $9.99, and it is the same price at virtually every store. At an independent self-serve wash the median advertised price is $18, with the middle half of shops between $15–$20. A salon groom, by contrast, starts at a median $60 ($49–$75 for the middle half). So the groomer’s starting price is about 3.3 times an independent tub and 6times the chain’s.

Two wash markets, not one
The DIY dog wash market splits cleanly in two. One side is a single national network: Tractor Supply runs pet-wash stations in its stores, our directory lists them store by store, and they advertise one flat price. That is why the chain row has no spread at all — it is a price list, not a market. The other side is the independent self-serve wash: a dedicated shop, often with grooming or a boutique attached, that sets its own price and frequently varies it by dog size or time in the tub.
The independents cost more — the median independent tub is about 1.8 times the chain price. What the difference buys, where it buys anything, is a dedicated wash shop rather than a station inside a larger store, and sometimes a groomer on hand. Whether that is worth it is a local question; the medians only tell you where the floor is.
Inside one shop: the tub vs the groomer
The cleanest comparison is a business that sells both. Among independent shops that publish a self-wash price and a groom price (27 of them, a small sample), the median self-wash is $20 and the median groom is $65 — the groom costs about 3.3 times the tub, same building, same shampoo shelf. These are medians of each column, so the ratio is between typical prices, not an average of shop-by-shop ratios.
Is it cheaper to wash your dog yourself?
Yes, on price per visit — but a self-wash is a bath, not a groom, so the fair question is what your dog actually needs. The tub fee usually covers a raised tub (no kneeling), a tether, shampoo and conditioner, towels, a brush or two and a high-velocity dryer; our wash listings record which of these each location provides. What it does not include is a haircut, a sanitary trim or, usually, nails — those are extra or DIY.
That makes the sweet spot fairly clear. Short-coated dogs, and many double-coated breeds that should not be clipped anyway, may need little more than regular baths and a thorough blow-out, which a tub does well. Doodles, poodles and other dogs with continuously growing coats still need the groomer for the cut; for them the tub is for the baths in between. Swapping even one professional visit for an independent tub saves roughly $42 on the starting price, and more at the chain.
What to do with this
Find a tub near you in our self-serve dog wash directory, and see how wash prices vary state by state in the self-serve dog wash price study. For the professional side, browse dog groomers or check the grooming cost by state. If a groomer coming to you appeals, we measured what mobile grooming costs, and what salons put on the menu.
Common questions
How much does a self-serve dog wash cost? The national chain advertises $9.99 a wash; independent self-serve washes advertise a median $18, typically $15–$20. Larger dogs or longer sessions can cost more at independents.
Is it cheaper to wash your dog yourself? Per visit, yes: a salon groom starts at a median $60, about 3.3 times an independent tub. But you are buying a bath, not a cut, and your own time.
When is the groomer worth it? When the dog needs a haircut, a breed-specific trim, dematting or careful nail work — and for anxious or large dogs that are hard to handle in a tub. Many owners do both: the groomer for the cut, the tub for the baths between.
The caveats
Advertised, not paid. Every figure is a median of prices businesses publish, not of what customers end up paying after add-ons, size surcharges or tips.
The chain price is one number. The chain row counts store listings, but they share a single advertised price, so its sample size says more about the network’s reach than about price variation.
Independents price in different units. Some charge per wash, some by dog size, some by time in the tub; we take the published base price.
A starting price is the cheapest dog. The groom figure is the advertised starting price, which usually means the smallest, simplest dog. A large or heavily coated dog will cost more, which widens the gap to the tub rather than narrowing it.
The same-shop sample is small. 27 shops publish both prices; treat that ratio as indicative.
Where these numbers come from
Wash prices are the advertised per-wash price at self-serve dog washes in our directory: the national chain’s pet-wash stations (1,208 store listings) and independent self-serve washes (130 that publish a price). Groom prices are the advertised starting price of salon groomers that publish one (1,123). The same-shop comparison is limited to independent businesses that publish both a self-wash price and a groom price (27 of them).
Every figure on this page is read from our own directory when the page builds, so it moves as the data does (collected June 2026). For the same dataset treated at full length — sample bars, percentiles and methodology — see FMK Research.
